The purple wavy lines across the Cartersville volleyball team's score sheet told the story. The lines were used to mark out which Canes were unavailable to the team due to COVID-19 quarantines.

Five lines — three of which marked out the names of key members of the rotation — showed just how much of an uphill climb Cartersville had in its Class 5A state second-round match Saturday at Greenbrier.

Without the handful of players, the Canes fell to the Wolfpack by a 25-9, 25-9, 25-15 final score. Cartersville finishes the season with a 28-15-1 record, while Greenbrier (34-2) advances to the Elite Eight to face McIntosh.

Mia Nicklas, playing through a severe hand injury, paced the Canes in Saturday's match. The sophomore finished with five kills, eight digs and two aces. The kills and digs led Cartersville, while the aces matched London Moultrie and Elizabeth Brown for the team lead.

Lily Gochee, filling in for senior setter Macey Vaughn, recorded six assists and four digs. Ailee England added three kills and three digs.
