One dead in Crump Road shooting

Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton confirmed that one person was killed in a shooting incident off Crump Road in Cartersville Sunday afternoon.

Guyton identified the victim as 38-year-old Clara Ashworth, of Cartersville.

“She was dead on the scene,” Guyton told The Daily Tribune News.

Bartow County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) public information officer Sgt. Jonathan White confirmed that one other individual, Charles Bagley, was shot Sunday.

A redacted police report indicates Bagley, a Cartersville resident, was transported to an unspecified medical facility for treatment.

One suspect, Cartersville resident David Aaron Turner, is in police custody. BCSO documents indicate he was arrested roughly an hour after the shooting transpired; he was initially booked on two counts of aggravated assault.

White said more charges are likely forthcoming for Turner.

“He still has pending charges, and once we have the official book in on him, we’ll know exactly what he's charged with,” he said. “The investigators are still working on that end of that.”

White said he anticipates “at least one murder charge” to be filed against the suspect.

An incident report indicates the first responding officer arrived at the residence off Cassville Road at 6:10 p.m.

The responding officer noted “a large pile of shell casings in the driveway” of the residence, as well as an empty rifle magazine. The officer described the exterior of the home as “littered with bullet holes.”

The officer described observing the deceased victim in a corner, “unresponsive and with obvious gunshot wounds to the abdomen and face.”

The responding officer said Bagley was located in a bathroom, "with a towel wrapped around his stomach and blood in the floor."

The report indicates that Bagley was conscious at that time. He reportedly told the officer that the suspect — who is his cousin — pulled into the driveway and fired several rounds with a rifle.

The suspect’s aunt — Donna Mills, listed as a Calhoun resident in the incident writeup — reportedly told the officer that she heard the accused enter the residence and continue firing.

"Donna yelled at David through the door to stop shooting," the incident report reads. "Donna says David told her 'shut the [expletive] up, Aunt Donna,' then continued shooting."

The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a 1999 Ford Ranger. The incident report states that Turner was stopped on Highway 41 shortly thereafter, where he was “taken into custody without any issues.”

“From my understanding, the offender in the case, this is his aunt’s residence,” White said. “And he’s related to the aunt’s son, that’s one of the victims in the case, as well.”

He said he believes the deceased victim was in a relationship with Bagley.

White said the BCSO is not releasing information on the type of weapon used in the shooting at this time.

Guyton said the results of an autopsy are pending, adding that the case is being investigated as a homicide.

As of Monday morning, however, White said several “particular details” of the case could not yet be confirmed.

“We’re just making sure that we go through all the information that was provided to us,” he said. “That way, we can understand the facts of the case better.”
