Kitty was a graduate of Charleston General Hospital Nursing Program. She opted for a life of marriage and family, and mostly used her nursing skills for the benefit of her family and neighbors. Kitty was a 55-year member of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church and loved her Marco Sunday school class. Any time the church called for volunteers, Kitty was ready and willing, with Meals on Wheels being a particular passion. Ringing a bell for the Salvation Army was a tradition at Christmas.
From the early days of the establishment of the Community Church Shop, she was a member of the board of directors and a tireless volunteer, working 30 hours a week at the age of 87.
Kitty was also very active with the Red Cross for many years, serving on the board of directors. She was active in disaster relief, responding to families burned out of their homes, and ran a shelter in the fellowship hall of Sam Jones Church during the blizzard of 1993. She volunteered at Red Cross blood drives every month until the age of 88.
Kitty was recognized for her contributions to the community by receiving numerous awards. In 1996, the American Legion of Bartow County named her as a finalist for Citizen of the Year.
