HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP

Cass, Cartersville girls soccer teams fall in non-region play

The Cass girls soccer team fell 7-0 to River Ridge Wednesday at Doug Cochran Stadium.

Wednesday's game represented the home opener for the Colonels, making it the first time the team has played at home since community coach Phil Phillips died in January after battling cancer.

Phillips coached at Cass for 18 years, and patches with his initials are being worn by the Colonels (1-3) this season.

Rome 3, Cartersville girls 2

The Cartersville girls couldn't make a 2-1 halftime lead stand up in a 3-2 home loss to Rome Wednesday at Weinman Stadium.

Freshman Hattie Williams slammed home a rebound off her own missed shot for the Canes' opening goal. Senior Kendyl Anderson found the back of the net from a free kick to help Cartersville take the lead into the break.

After an own goal evened the match, Rome scored the winner roughly midway through the second half.

Next up for the Canes (2-1-1) will be another home game — this one against Dawson County — Friday at Weinman.
