An 86-year-old Bartow County man died in an Atlanta hospital after being assaulted days earlier in his home. The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that neighbors rushed to assist the victim and shot the alleged perpetrator of the assault.
Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton confirmed the victim who died as a result of his wounds from the assault was Calvin Lee.
According to the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office, 911 received several calls in response to a disturbance in the area of Floral Drive just north of Cartersville after 7 p.m. on May 6.
When deputies arrived on scene, it was discovered that the resident at the home had been assaulted with a board by someone who was being held at gunpoint by a neighbor. The alleged perpetrator had been shot several times when he attempted to assault two neighbors with a metal post, according to a BCSO release.
The assault victim was transported by helicopter to an Atlanta-area hospital, and the man who allegedly assaulted him was taken to another area hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds, which were non-life threatening. He was later transported in custody by the sheriff’s office and had initially been charged with burglary, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal trespass.
The two neighbors who assisted the victim do not face any charges. The sheriff’s office said the alleged offender will face more charges once the investigation is completed.
The name of the person arrested has not yet been released.
