Toccoa comes from behind, knocks off Cartersville, 6-4

Cartersville struck early for three runs but it wasn’t enough as Toccoa scored five runs in the fifth inning for a 6-4 victory in the 2014 Georgia 10-11 Little League pool play Saturday.

Cartersville next plays in the tournament today when it takes on Northern. The tournament is being played at the Cartersville Little League Complex at Clearwater Street Park.

Toccoa 6, Cartersville 4

The Purple Hurricanes opened up their tournament play by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, then added a final run in the fourth.

Toccoa scored in the second, closing to 3-1. The Canes answered that run in the fourth inning for a 4-1 lead.

Toccoa took over the game with its 5-run fifth inning and then held Cartersville scoreless in the top of the 6th.

Cartersville opened the game offensively with a walk by Kolbe Benham. He advanced to second on a passed ball thrown when Ethan Wolfe was batting. Wolfe eventually was walked.

Benham moved to third on another passed ball and Wolfe stole second. Jackson Norris singled to centerfield to get on base and Benham scored on a hard ground ball hit by Jacob Desmond and Wolfe moved to third as Cartersville took a 1-0 lead.

Wolfe scored on a passed ball. Norris scored when Trey Holstein grounded out to second base, putting Cartersville up 3-0.

The Purple Hurricanes scored their final run in the fourth after Jesse Grogan got aboard with a single to right field. Trevor Montgomery was inserted as a special pinch runner and moved to third when Logan Quijano doubled to centerfield. Montgomery closed out scoring for Cartersville when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Cline.

Toccoa responded with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn its victory.

Cartersville hammered out four hits to seven for Toccoa.

The Canes were handicapped by three errors while Toccoa was flawless in its fielding.

Benham drew three bases on balls, tops for the team.

Cartersville’s hits came from Quijano, a double, and Norris, Holstein and Jesse Grogan, all singles.

The Canes used six pitchers on the evening, Micah Earwood, Norris, Holstein, Wolfe, Montgomery and Christian Martin.

Other games

Cartersville resumes its play in the state tournament today at Joe Frank Harris field.

It plays Northern at 3 p.m.
