Noise study approved by airport authority

The Cartersville-Bartow County Airport Authority’s quarterly meeting Monday addressed everything from noise batement to a website. A federally mandated environmental study may reignite some lingering concerns about noise for neighbors living around the Cartersville-Bartow County Airport.

“The Cartersville-Bartow County Airport Authority has submitted an airport layout plan to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that calls for the improvement of our runways, specifically the overrun,” Authority Chairman Hans Lutjen explained. “When you do projects that are federally funded, you have to do an environmental study; it’s part of the plan approval process. Due to our airport traffic, especially jet traffic, a noise study is necessary. Before the FAA will approve our airport layout plan, they want to see what impact the plan will have on our neighbors to the north and south.”

The airport covers nearly 185 acres with one runway measuring more than a mile in length.

Mainly due to its primary tenant, Phoenix Air, the airport averages more than 50,000 approaches and departures annually, or an average of 138 per day.

Noise has been a big issue ever since the introduction of jets, Lutjen said.

“We have noise abatement procedures for commercial aircraft that were designed in the 1990s,” he said. “But the plan also calls for different types of departures as well as different directions to try to mitigate the noise. We will study the information and hold public hearings then try to work out a reasonable solution with the public.”

Authority members voted to approve a noise study by Robert & Company of Atlanta not to exceed $37,000. The study also includes a public hearing, according to Lutjen.

The airport also needs a website, Authority Secretary Ken Adams said. Most area airports already have one.

“We are becoming one of the busier airports in northwest Georgia,” he said. “We need a web presence. We need to be supplying information about how we handle jet traffic, landing patterns, fuel information and frequencies — all aspects of aviation at this airport.”

In other business, the authority:

• appointed Adams as chairman of the Airport Safety Committee.

• voted to change the authority’s bank account to an interest bearing account.

• approved an engineering services agreement with Croy Engineering.

• approved lease agreements with Phoenix Air and CJay Aviation.
