The city of Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department is about to kick off its Summer Softball League program.

Britt McGill, adult athletic coordinator for CPRD, said the season begins July 22 with games to be played at Dellinger Park.

“We like to give our adult league players something where they can exercise while having fun this time of year,” McGill said. “This is when adults have some down time. It’s the time of year when tournaments are over and school hasn’t started back.”

He said a lot of the travel team ball has slowed up so parents are getting something of a break from all the running around they do with their children.

“This is a good time of the year for them to get a little more softball in,” he said. “They can get a little exercise, some recreation and just a chance to get out with their buddies.”

McGill said the recreation department is pretty flexible about the program. “We let them play regular softball with one umpire. It’s less expensive for them and for the recreation department, too.

“We take their feedback and try to accommodate their requests.”

Games are usually played at Dellinger Park on fields 4, 5 and 6. The initial game begins at 6:30 p.m. or later.

Based on past experience, the league should draw from eight to 14 teams with around 100 participants although those numbers could expand.

“The park provides bats, but the players provide their own softballs and jerseys,” he added.

McGill said participants are guaranteed a six-game season.

“They will play doubleheaders on Tuesday or Thursday,” he said. “When you get them to the park, it’s usually better to knock out two games. That helps save on their expenses and it also means less days away from their wives and kids for them.”

The summer softball season lasts through about the first of August.

“We usually finish up around when schools start back and just before people become busy again,” McGill said.

He said players can come to the Dellinger Park office to sign up for the activity.

Registration for the program will continue until July 11.

McGill said the Summer League will include Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Church, Industrial and Co-ed leagues.

CPRD, GRPA and ASA rules apply.

The cost for participating is $305 per team.
