Those elite athletes include four Colonels as they qualified for the state meet with their performances Saturday during the Class AAAA sectional meet in Carrollton.
Hayley Gildersleeve was the lone Lady Colonel to qualify as she placed fourth in the girls shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 10 inches. She qualifies for the girls state meet held this Saturday in Albany. Gildersleeve was the only Cass girl on the team to advance to the sectional meet. “Hayley threw her best throw of the season,” Cass head coach Danny Fairbanks said.
For the boys, Jaison Morning had the highest finish for Cass as he came in fifth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:33.25, a personal record. Morning also placed eighth in the 3200 with a time of 10:20.38. He qualifies for the boys state meet in Jefferson in both events.
Keylon Woodard also qualified for the state meet by placing seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet, 7 inches.
Walter Brown was the boys third state qualifier as he placed seventh in the high jump with a height of 5-10. He also and placed 10th in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.96 seconds, but will not advance to state in that event. Ray Varnum placed 13th in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, two inches. He did not qualify for state.
Brannon Lando placed 15th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.84 seconds and will not advance to state.
