The Georgia Highlands baseball team outlasted Shorter University (JV) on Monday after seven lead changes, pulling out a 12-7 win at Ledbetter Field.

GHC pulled out the win thanks to a strong sixth inning. The Chargers went up for good on a two-run double by Ty Fowler (Cartersville/Cartersville HS) off Franklin Morris, scoring Gavin Peters (Douglasville/Alexander HS) and Maxwell Watkins (Powder Springs/McEachern HS). Fowler went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the game.

Peters had two extra-base hits for GHC. He doubled in the fourth inning and tripled in the sixth inning.

Jeremy Brown (Dacula/Mill Creek HS) struck out three en route to the win. Brown, along with Greg Gerard (Bremen/Bremen HS), combined to give up just four hits over 4 1/3 shutout innings.

Fowler, Andy Mocahbee (Ringgold/Ringgold HS) and Peters helped lead the Charger offense. They combined for six hits and five RBIs.

The bottom of the first saw GHC take an early lead, 3-0. A single by Chris Baker (Calhoun/Sonoraville HS), bringing home Blake Oxenreider (Cedartown/Cedartown HS), who started the inning off. The Chargers then tacked on more runs when Baker scored on an RBI single by Elijah White (Kennesaw/North Cobb HS) and Mocahbee scored on an RBI single by Fowler.

The Chargers brought home two runs in the second inning and matched that run total in the fourth. In the second, GHC scored on an error.

The Chargers answered Shorter University’s top inning with two runs of its own in the fourth. GHC scored on an RBI double by Peters and an RBI single by White.

“It’s always nice to pick up a win and giving some guys who haven’t played much during the course of our conference games some playing time. It helps keep us sharp as we head into a possible playoff run,” Chargers coach Mike Marra said.

The Chargers swept the 6-Mile series from the Hawks as they won 9-2 in game one of the series back on Feb. 26.

GHC continues GCAA play on Wednesday in game one of four with Gordon State College at The East Cobb Baseball Complex in Marietta, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
