A 23-year-old Rydal man is suspected of shooting one person before turning the gun on himself.

Cobb County Police Department said Richard Holcomb shot Zakeem Berry, 23, of Kennesaw just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday near Red Lobster on George Busbee Parkway in Kennesaw.

Officers were dispatched to the area after receiving a 911 call about a person having been shot, according to CCPD release. When uniform officers arrived, they located Berry in the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound.

He was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital where he died as a result of the injury.

Police identified Holcomb of Rydal as the suspect. He was located after the shooting at Kroger, 3895 Cherokee St., Acworth, with a self-inflicted gunshot. He also was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital where he later died.

CCPD Sgt. Dana Pierce said Monday that no connection between the two men had been established.

“As far as we know, they did not know each other,” he said.

No motive was known and there appeared to have been no altercation prior to the shooting.

“Nothing [happened] that may have precipitated the suspect shooting the victim,” Pierce said.

Holcomb had no priors through either Cobb or Bartow County. Pierce said the county did not have a record of Holcomb, and Bartow County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said there was no record of Holcomb having been booked into the Bartow County Jail.

Pierce could provide no details on the weapon other than it was a handgun, caliber unknown on Monday.

It was not clear whether the weapon was registered to Holcomb or simply in his possession.

Pierce said an autopsy would be conducted on one or both men.
