Chad Murray, Cartersville head coach, said he was curious how the Lady Purple Hurricanes would respond to the 5-3 loss to highly regarded Rome, a member of Region 5-AAAAA.
“I was glad we rebounded from the loss,” he said. “I think we played a little angry and that was good to see.”
He added Gordon Central was missing some starters and that might have affected their play some.
The Lady Canes earned a 5-0 lead by halftime and scored five more goals and ended the game early because of the 10-goal rule.
Ashton Sanders scored Cartersville’s first goal with an assist from Stefani Will in the fifth minute. Goal two was tallied in the 19th minute by Sanders with an assist from Marion Munisteri.
Sydney Miller made their third goal with assist by Will in the 32nd minute while Kate Garner rang up goal four in the 38th minute, assisted by Emily Alters. Kaitlin Abernathy put the Lady Canes up 5-0 with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute.
Will opened scoring in the second half with an assist from Anna Phillips in the 45th minute while Payton Putzer made it 7-0 with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute.
Garner scored her second goal of the evening to make it 8-0 with an assist from Abernathy in the 63rd minute. Abernathy scored her second goal in the 66th minute assisted by Alters.
Abernathy made the hat trick a few minutes later with an assist by Aubree Smith, making it 10-0.
Next up for Cartersville is Adairsville, which it plays Tuesday. Murray said the winner of Tuesday’s game will be region champions.
“They have us on goals scored against them if we have to go to a tiebreaker,” he said. “We have to win the game to be region champions.”
The two region powers will play the game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Weinman Stadium.
Cartersville also will be celebrating senior night at the game.
The Lady Canes are 11-2 overall and 10-0 in region play.
Adairsville is 14-1 overall and 11-1 in region play. The Tigers’ only region loss is to Cartersville, a game they lost 1-0 on March 13.
