Woodland, Cass top tennis foes

The Cass High tennis teams are off to a good start under their new coaches, as both the girls and boys squads won Thursday.

Also, both Woodland teams administered 5-0 defeats to New Manchester in region battles Thursday.

Cass girls 5, Paulding 0

The Lady Colonels and Colonels defeated Paulding County to pick up nonconference victories.

Brooke McDurmon’s girls singles and doubles teams all won their matches on the evening and the Lady Colonels improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in their region.

At the girls singles No. 1 line, Ryleigh Lanham won, 8-3; while Aleigh Beard recorded an 8-0 victory at the singles No. 2 line. Jessica Frank also administered an 8-0 defeat at the singles No. 3 line.

In doubles No. 1, Flower Nation and Morgan Mayton won, 8-0, while at doubles No. 2 Callie Dodd and Hannah Howard also were on the high side of an 8-0 victory.

The Cass girls had opened their season and region play with a 5-0 defeat of River Ridge on Tuesday.

Cass boys 5, Paulding 0

The Cass boys opened their season with a victory for new coach Kevin Cunningham.

Avery Cornett earned a singles No. 1 victory, 8-1, while at singles No. 2 Eric Dunlap recorded an 8-1 win and Jacob McBrayer defeated his opponent, 8-0, at the singles No. 3 slot.

At the doubles No. 1 line, Logan Barrere and Josh Musilli dominated their opponents, 8-0, while at the doubles No. 2 line Caleb Reeves and Fischer Wood won, 8-0.

The Cass boys next play today at River Ridge. The region match is to start at 3:45 p.m.

The boys and girls team both play on Monday, when they visit Gordon Central in a match that is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Woodland girls 5, New Manchester 0

The Woodland girls had a battle at the No. 1 singles slot but the other players had an easier time of it as they defeated New Manchester.

LeArian Turner, playing at the No. 1 singles position, was tested in her first match before winning, 7-6, 6-2.

Katie Abernathy won at the singles No. 2 position, 6-0, 6-0, while Valerie Glass earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

At No. 1 doubles, Karlie Abernathy and Alaina Ellis took their match 6-1, 6-0, while Chandler Still and Ashlyn Walker won 6-3, 6-0.

Their next match is Tuesday when they host East Paulding. Matches begin around 4:45 p.m.

Woodland boys, 5, New Manchester 0

The Woodland boys overpowered New Manchester, 5-0, in their tennis matches.

Head coach Kevin Tant said his team stayed focused and that was the key to their victory.

“It’s always a challenge playing a young team because of the need to keep focus during the match,” according to Tant. “Many of the rallies had rather unexpected strokes and patience was the key to success.”

The victors at the singles line were Dustin Dodson, who claimed 6-0, 6-1 victories at the No. 1 line; Brandon Rutledge, 6-0, 6-1 wins at the No. 2 line; and Griffin Hale, 6-0, 6-1, at singles No. 3.

Grayson Roberts and Tanner Self won 6-0, 6-0, at doubles No. 1, and the team picked up a win by forfeit at doubles No. 2.
