Adairsville City Council considered hiring more cops, closing railroad crossings and making four city streets one way.
Police chief Robert Jones described his department as being in “dire straits,” with four officers needed to bring the department up to full capacity.
“We have one officer who has been out for six months due to knee surgery,” he said. “But he now needs another surgery, so he is out for another six to eight months. Now I have learned that another officer will have to be out. We already had a vacancy and now there are two more, so that’s three vacancies. It is going to be difficult to continue to offer our high level of service.”
Jones also reminded council that any officers hired would need equipment up to and including an automobile.
Community development director Jamey Cochran revisited the idea of permanently closing the Park Street railroad crossing in downtown.
Key Phillips and Michael Nash with the Georgia Department of Transportation and Sheriee Bowman, manager of the Consumer Affairs and Safety Department for CSX Railroad, reported that the downtown area had too many unnecessary and redundant crossings and they recommended closing Park Street and upgrading the nearby King Street crossing.
Council member Lee Castro questioned closing the crossing completely and asked if there could be a pedestrian crossing instead.
He was told that he could indeed leave a pedestrian crossing but that funding might not be available.
Council also discussed a proposal to make Bruce, Lawrence and Casey streets and Ripley Avenue one-way streets due to the narrow lanes. The idea would make the area more accessible to emergency responders.
In other business, council discussed:
• a temporary construction easement at Bill Hix/Hall Station Road and SR 140.
• modification of a gas consulting agreement with Keck and Wood.
• a quit claim deed for North Bartow Community Services.
• modifying an organizational chart for Public Works.
• selling at auction seven condemned automobiles.
Adairsville City Council wil meet again on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Adairsville Rail Depot.
