Woodland Middle School seventh grader C.J. Adcock is the winner of the 2014 Bartow County School System Spelling Bee, held Friday at the Clarence Brown Conference Center. He will go on to compete at the district level in Rome.

“I studied a little bit here and there. We were given a list at the beginning after we won our school championship,” Adcock said. “We just had to study hard and study a lot. It was a lot of fun.”

When asked what was going through his mind when he recognized the spelling of the final word, “incoherently,” he said “I can win this finally, yay!”

He explained his plan to prepare for the upcoming district competition.

“I’ll probably fulfill an item on my bucket list and read a dictionary,” Adcock said, laughing.

If he is unable to compete on the district level, runner-up Christina Burdette, a fifth grader from Adairsville Elementary School, will take Adcock’s place. Throughout the competition, Adcock and Burdette gave each other high-fives and “fist bumps” as congratulatory gestures.

“I thought she was cool ..., she wasn’t rude in losing, she wasn’t a sore loser, she was nice and she was nice to me the entire time,” Adcock said.

When asked why he chose to compete in his school’s spelling bee, which resulted in being invited to compete at the county competition, he said, “I just love competition and proving my intelligence.”

Mother Roxanne Adcock said she was proud of her son for his preparation and sportsmanship.

“We worked really hard and diligently. He’s kind of like me, he strays a little bit and gets distracted, but we tried really hard to keep it on the main subjects and I’m just really proud of him and his sportsmanship and how he was kind to others,” Roxanne Adcock said.
