“I’ve been with the chorus for about five years and we’ve [delivered Singing Valentines] every year since I’ve been with the chorus. I don’t know how many years back it goes, but as far as Cartersville, it’s just been the last three years that we’ve had the number of people from Cartersville singing where we’ve been able to [form] our own group for the Cartersville area,” said Bill Devine, who will be singing with his fellow Bartow Countians — Don Jackson, Dave Elvers and Mac McKenzie. “The people that we deliver Valentines to, without exception, [are] wonderfully surprised, maybe a little embarrassed, but they truly love it.”
Along with a rose and a personalized card, a Singing Valentine package will feature a quartet singing two old-fashioned barbershop love songs in four-part harmony.
The cost starts at $50 for a four-hour window for delivery and increases to $70 and $90 for two-hour and one-hour delivery windows, respectively. Some of the proceeds will help fund Youth in Harmony scholarships for high school males to attend barbershop training programs at Harmony College.
“We’re probably going to have six to eight guys singing,” Devine said. “So there will be some from outside the Cartersville area. Now depending on how many valentines we sell, we may have to import another group here to help deliver.
“... We’ve sold about, it looks like at this point, probably 10 to 12 in Cartersville. Traditionally, people wait pretty late to make their purchase so we’re expecting several more on top of that.”
According to www.bigchickenchorus.org, “We welcome any opportunity to apply our hobby of singing four-part harmony, and have traveled extensively to present our brand of entertainment to a variety of audiences, both young and old.
“Based in Marietta, GA, the Big Chicken Chorus has gained recognition from all corners of the Society and from our most appreciative audiences at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, the Atlanta Civic Center, the Georgia Fine Arts Center, Symphony Hall, the Georgia Dome, the Georgia Pacific ‘Art in the Heart’ series, the ‘Cobb County Jubilee Arts Alliance’ series, the Robert Ferst Center at Georgia Tech, the Rialto Theatre, and all over the Southeast. The BCC has also performed for the Georgia Music Educators Association and for the IBM World Series Seminar in Atlanta.”
