Christmas may be over, but the accompanying holiday festivals are still on the menus for girls and boys basketball players at three Bartow County high schools.

Teams that play during holidays gain experience just before entering the heart of their respective seasons, January and February, for region play and, hopefully, as part of preparations for a run through the state playoffs.

The Cartersville boys kick off play Friday in the Lake City Classic at Allatoona, while the Cartersville girls play one game today in the Pickens County Holiday Classic, whose girls team is coached by Donna Enis, a longtime coach of the Lady Purple Hurricanes who stepped down there in 2012.

Also, the Cass High boys open play today in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic.

Lake City Classic

The Cartersville boys already earned some holiday hardware by winning the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival just last week.

Now the Purple Hurricanes are aiming at another tough tournament as they begin play in the Lake City Classic on Friday.

Cartersville (8-1) will step up three divisions to play Pope in the classic, which is being played at Allatoona High School. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.

The Greyhounds sport an 8-2 overall record and have made the state playoffs twice in the past three years. They are a member of Region 7B-AAAAA.

The tournament host is Allatoona, which finished as the runner-up in the state in AAAAA basketball a year ago and is a perennial state basketball power.

Among the other participants are North Cobb Christian, expected to contend for the Class A state championship, North Cobb, which made the Class AAAAAA state semifinals last year, and North Paulding and Carrollton, both familiar opponents to Bartow County teams.

The Lady Canes (8-2) also have basketball plans, drawing the Cherokee Warriors, a Region 5-AAAAAA team, as a first-round opponent in the Pickens Holiday Tournament. Tipoff is at 3 p.m. today. The Lady Canes also visit Model on Saturday. Tipoff for that game is 2:30 p.m.

Cass plays 3 games

The Cass boys play today, drawing Belfry at 8 p.m. in the 2013 Mountain Schoolboy Classic. The tournament is played at Belfry High School in Goody, Ky.

On Friday, Cass plays Jenkins at 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday the Colonels play Magoffin County at 6:30 p.m.
