“I think the persons that are actively with the public ... and your police officers, they get a thank you probably on a regular basis from the community. But it’s the person who works a sanitation truck or the person who is working to make sure electricity flows from the city of Cartersville or the water department works well, I think it’s those people that really don’t get a thank you ...,” said event founder Parnick Jennings. “I think it’s an opportunity to let those people know, who do the thankless jobs, that we appreciate what they do.”
Free to those who work for Bartow County, a municipality, the Georgia State Patrol or any state agency located within the county, the event provides a steak meal to public servants as an expression of thanks.
“The one thing I think the community has become even more aware of going forward are these unfortunate tragic events in other parts of our country, for example, the firefighters out west that lost their lives,” Jennings said. “I think people really ... [have] a greater awareness of what these men and women do to make sure that we have a wonderful place to live and work. ... People, even more today than ever before, want to let these people know they are appreciated.”
Scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cartersville Civic Center, 435 W. Main St., the luncheon is open to the public, who may purchase a meal for $7.50 or volunteer their services.
“There is a growing number of people that want to volunteer and want to pour the iced tea and clean the tables and help with the plates and things like that. Some people just want to be there at the door and shake people’s hands and say thank you,” Jennings said.
This week Bartow County Commissioner Steve Taylor and Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini will sign a proclamation Tuesday at 10 a.m. declaring Sept. 10, 2013, as “Public Servants Appreciation Day, a day to remember those we have lost and to honor those who serve,” the document reads.
