The Adairsville, Cartersville and Coahulla Creek high school volleyball teams opened region play against each other Tuesday with each team taking a win and a loss.

Coahulla handed the host, Cartersville, a defeat in the first match. Adairsville then handily beat Coahulla, 25-20 and 25-15.

“That game really got us pumped up,” Adairsville coach Dave Adams said. “We were coming off a good weekend. We were feeling confident. We have a good team.”

The Lady Tigers then faced Cartersville and lost in two games, 25-22 and 25-19.

“For the most part, it was nip and tuck the whole way,” Adams said. “Both games were back and forth, and that’s what you expect in area games, especially when you’re rivals.”

Adairsville is now 7-1 on the season after losing to Cartersville. The Canes pick up their first win of the season after facing an extremely competitive out-of-region schedule.

Cass plays pair

Cass continued to improve in some areas but was unable to notch any wins in volleyball matches Tuesday.

The Lady Colonels fell to Sonoraville, 2-0, and Ringgold, 2-0.

Coach Alicen Webster said she was proud of the effort by her team against Sonoraville.

“We competed with Sonoraville even though we didn’t pick up a victory,” Webster said.

She said Cass, which already is a young team, has had to ask some new players to step up because of attrition.

“We have some new players on our team, and I was glad how we played,” she said. “We still need to work on our setting and hitting.”

Sonoraville took the first match, 25-7, and the second, 25-10.

Ringgold defeated Cass, 25-14 and 25-15.

Webster said even though the matches were closer than against Sonoraville, she believes her team was capable of being more competitive than it showed.

She added some of the seniors have stepped up their work on behalf of Cass.

“Janee Callahan had some big blocks in both matches,” Webster said.

The Lady Colonels next play on Thursday when they take on East Paulding.
