Fans and family will get a free early peek at some of the region’s best softball players in a tournament hosted by Woodland High this week.

The Lady Wildcats will join eight other northwest Georgia teams for the Softball Play Day, which will be held Monday through Wednesday at the Woodland softball field, located on the high school campus behind the football stadium.

Colman Roberts, Woodland head coach, stated the tournament will feature five games per day with an hour-and-30-minute time limit.

There’s no drop dead time limit, according to Roberts, and teams will finish the inning after the clock winds down.

Also, the teams will play international tiebreakers, if needed, and use Georgia High School Association run rules.

Just as important, there is no admission charge to attend the games.

“We do not charge at the gate,” Roberts stated in a release. “This is not a fundraiser. [It’s] just a way to play some different teams and have fun.”

Participating teams with Woodland include Armuchee, Cass, Rockmart, Chattooga, South Paulding, Creekview, Cedartown and Pepperell.

All are powers in their respective softball regions with most frequently participating in the state playoffs. Rockmart, for example, played for the state championship in 2009, losing to Buford.

Games are scheduled each day at 10 a.m., 11:50 a.m., 1:40 p.m., 3:20 p.m. and 5:10 p.m.

Spokesmen stressed there will be no gate fee charged for attending as parents already pay enough in supporting the various softball programs.

Concessions will be available during games with the menu offerings including hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and boiled peanuts. The concession stand is under the tents next to the school’s press box.

All parking for the softball games will be available past the concession stand toward the softball field and tennis courts.

Officials noted the school baseball field is currently being used by Perfect Game and admission is being charged to attend those games.
