With senior citizens often the victims of crime, the Bartow TRIAD hopes the annual GALA Friday will provide information to area residents.

Hosted in conjunction with Older American’s Month, the GALA event will be held May 31 at the Beavers Drive Senior Center from noon to 2 p.m.

“We try to provide current information on crime prevention in our county and to gather resource providers to help seniors learn of the services and supports available to them. We serve lunch — this year from Adams BBQ — and have speakers to update the seniors on local and national crime and fraud trends,” said Kerry DeFoe, GeorgiaCares Coordinator for the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging.

During this month’s gathering, themed “Lazy Days of Summer,” Sheriff Clark Millsap and Euharlee Police Chief Terry Harget will address attendees, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Regional Office in Atlanta will offer a special presentation.

“The GALA TRIAD event is an annual event that the TRIAD hosts to raise awareness of ways the community can come together to reduce and prevent the victimization of senior adults and to help senior adults be more aware of the services available to them,” said Jennifer Armstead with SYNERGY HomeCare of North Georgia. “As abuse and other forms of victimization are on the rise, groups like the TRIAD are here to offer help to reduce this in our area.”

DeFoe encouraged area businesses and organizations to use the event as a chance to reach the community.

“If any part of the services you offer touches seniors, we want them to be aware of it so they can take advantage of any services they might need. This is an opportunity to reach nearly 200 people at one event,” she said.

For organizations offering any type of service geared toward seniors, they are asked to contact DeFoe at the Area Agency on Aging at kdefoe@nwgrc.org or 706-295-6684. The cost of a booth is $25.

A joint venture between the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office, public safety organizations, and community groups and agencies, the Bartow TRIAD is a local arm of the National Association of Triads.

“The Bartow TRIAD is a coalition of law enforcement, public safety, seniors and concerned service providers,” DeFoe said. “Our goal is to help seniors learn to recognize, report and prevent crime by educating them on current trends and scams, including health care fraud and general consumer protection.”
