A little more than a week has past since the entire Cartersville boys and girls track and field team celebrated winning the 5-AAA region championship held at Gordon Central.

This past weekend, Canes’ track and field coach Rusty Grimmett had high hopes that those who qualified for the sectionals held at Lakewood Stadium by finishing in the top four in their respective event would move on the state boys and girls finals.

As it turned out, the Canes will be sending only Tommy Morrison to the boys’ state finals to be held in Jefferson starting Thursday.

Morrison qualified for state in the 800-meter run.

Only three Lady Canes will be competing in the state finals to be held at Albany a week later.

Blake Perry qualified for state in the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Anna Hightower is entered in the pole vault event. Bree Cole will be running in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter run.

The lone male representing Adairsville who will be heading to Jefferson will be Jordon Character, a sophomore, who placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.38.

Emily Sexauer will be the lone Lady Tiger who will be competing in the girls’ state championship at Albany.

“I couldn’t be more happier for Emily and Jordan,” coach Kent Howard. “They are both incredible athletes who are proud to represent their school at the state track and field finals.”

Sexauer, also a seventh-place finisher, qualified for state with a time of 13 minutes, one second in the 3,200-meter run.
