“I’m sure we’ll pick it back up [in the future],” Cartersville Lions Club President Rick Schloemer said “... [The public’s support has] been great. The whole county has been behind it and we want to say thanks to everybody. ... It’s a big tradition for a lot of people.”
With some tickets having already been purchased for the originally scheduled May 22 event, individuals are urged to contact the Lion they obtained the ticket from to receive a full refund.
“This is going to be a missed year because we kind of missed our window of opportunity when the person that smokes our hams went out of business,” said Ron Lusk, past-president of the Cartersville Lions Club. “We only had four weeks till the date of the event, so we felt like that was a little tight to try to go ahead and pull it off. So, rather than screw it up, we’d just rather postpone it and do it again next year.
“... We wanted everybody to understand we weren’t going to profit from the cancellation. We appreciate the community supporting us in the things that we try to do and helping us provide the services that we do provide to the community.”
With the event generating between $2,000 and $5,000 each year, the barbecue’s proceeds help the club with several of its community projects, such as providing eye glasses and exams, and support local organizations, including the Etowah Scholarship Foundation, Boy Scouts and Little League.
“I believe this one would have been the 74th [barbecue],” Lusk said. “In the early years, it was a Cartersville barbecue. And when the town decided not to continue that event, the Lions Club kind of picked it up and kept it going.
“People for years have been going out to Gatewood Park and it’s been like a social event ... where everybody would get together and talk about who was running for election or things of that nature and generally visit with one another. It’s just been a tradition through the years to occur on the third Wednesday in May.”
