Woodland won the Region 5-AAAAA golf tournament Tuesday and at least one player — Brittney Sizemore — will be competing at state after finishing as the low medalist at the tournament, held at Creekside Golf Course in Hiram.

John Howard, head golf coach, said the Lady Wildcats won by virtue of having two golfers who turned in the best scores during region play.

Woodland had the best score out of eight teams. East Paulding finished second.

Sizemore was the low medalist, shooting an 89. Finishing just behind her was MaKayla Knuchel, also of Woodland, who shot 100.

“Brittney and MaKayla helped us win the region by turning in the top two scores,” Howard said. “We have to wait and see if we qualify to go to the state, but our low medalist automatically advances to the state at Jekyll Island the week of May 20.”

The Woodland golfers will now practice at their home course — Woodland Hills — while they await word on qualifying for state, said Howard, who is golf coach and athletic director at the school.

The Woodland boys earlier finished fourth in the boys region tournament.
