The Excel girls high school tennis team split its two games Tuesday and earned the right to play in the state private school playoffs.

Now coach Mark Hibbard is pointing the Lady Eagles at winning today and grabbing the No. 3 seed in those playoffs.

Excel 3, Fellowship Christian 0

Against Fellowship Christian at the No. 1 singles line, Moriah Hibbard won 6-1, 6-0 while Miriam Hibbard earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

Callaway Ford, who plays at the No. 3 doubles line, had won her first match 6-3 and was ahead 4-1 in the second when it was pulled.

Excel picked up its third win at the No. 2 doubles line, where Tessa Thornbrough and Abby Keefe won 6-0, 6-0.

Excel’s No. 1 doubles line had won one match 6-1 and was up 4-3 in the second match when it was pulled.

Darlington 3, Excel 2

Although Excel defeated Darlington just a week ago, 3-2, the Lady Eagles could not repeat that performance against the Lady Tigers in the region tournament Tuesday.

Claiming the Lady Eagles’ two victories on the day were Miriam Hibbard, who won 6-2, 6-2; and Thornbrough and Keefe, who earned 6-0, 6-1 victories.

At the No. 1 singles line, Moriah Hibbard fell 5-7, 4-6 and Ford was defeated 1-6, 1-6 at the No. 3 singles line. Taylor Vaughan and Caroline Moore were defeated 3-6, 6-2, 4-6.

The coach said Moriah played well but was unable to get the victory. “Moriah’s match was a really good one.”

He said his No. 1 doubles team was up 3-0 in the third set but then changed their approach.
