Lady Eagles win 4-1 in tennis

The Excel Lady Eagles had little trouble in their tennis match against Christian Heritage Monday, while the boys’ tennis team struggled in both singles and doubles.

The Lady Eagles (7-1) won two of their singles matches while sweeping both of their doubles matches. Moriah Hibbard and Miriam Hibbard each won, 6-0, 6-0. Callaway Ford dropped her match, 4-6, 1-6.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Caroline Moore and Taylor Vaughn won, 6-3, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles team of Abbey Keefe and Tessa Thornborough battled back to win their match after dropping the first set, 3-6.

Keefe and Thornborough easily won the second set, 6-1. A tiebreaker was needed to decide the third set in which the duo won, 10-8.

For the boys, only No. 2 singles player Sam Kirkland and the Eagles’ No. 2 doubles team of Jake Newhouse and Spence DaCamara won a set.

No. 1 singles player Cade Archer lost 5-7, 5-7. Kirkland won the first set, 6-3, only to lose 3-6 and 6-10 (tiebreaker). Simon Morris, playing at the No. 3 singles spot, lost 3-6, 1-6.

In doubles, Excel’s No. 1 doubles team of Heathen Barton and Andrew Tyree fell 1-6, 2-6. Newhouse and DaCamara won their first set, 6-2, but fell 4-6, 7-10 (tiebreaker) in sets two and three, respectively.
