Turner, a council member since 1986, learned that his name would adorn the new baseball complex — Turner Stadium — being built at Joe Cowan Park.
“They totally caught me by surprise,” Turner said, wiping tears from his eyes. “No one said a word. It just feels good to know that people appreciate what I have tried to do.”
Guyton said the campaign to name the stadium for Turner began about a month ago when several council members broached the idea.
“Of course it was a unanimous decision,” Guyton said.
Turner was appointed to the city council to replace longtime member Emmie Nelson who died in office.
“I went to Miss Emmie’s house looking for information about the city,” Turner laughed. “I found it in a cardboard box under her bed. I even found the original city charter in that box. Things sure have changed since those days.”

• A $100,000 grant for phase two of the Trail Grant project was announced.
• Members learned that Georgia Power had made a billing error, reducing the Cowan Stadium electric bill from $803 per month to $363 per month.
