Tigers top Warriors, 10-5

Adairsville scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break open a close game and defeat Gordon Central, 10-5, in high school baseball action Friday night.

The Tigers had jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Warriors with a strong second inning, but Gordon Central matched those runs and added one to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning.

Adairsville then roared back for three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 10-4 lead. Gordon Central tallied its final run of the game in the top of the seventh.

The victory raised Adairsville’s record in Region 5-AAA to 2-1 as the Tigers snapped back from a 14-4 defeat at the hands of Cartersville earlier in the week.

Dalton Whitten picked up the win for Adairsville on the mound. Ryan Morris took the loss for Gordon Central.

Shouldering the offensive load for Adairsville were Tristin Smith, 2-for-3 with a double and a single, two RBIs, two runs; Kyle Adams, 1-for-4, one run; Dylan Cochran, 3-for-4, hit by pitch, two runs; Zach Sherwood, two runs, one RBI, one hit by pitch; Cody Melton, 2-for-4, one RBI; Hunter Smith, 1-for-4, one run, one RBI; Dakota Hines, one run; Nate Medlock, 1-for-2, one run, one RBI; and Casey McCrory, one RBI.

Hines worked 3 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, two of the earned, and struck out four; Whitten worked 2 2/3 innings, gave up no runs and struck out five; Adams threw one inning, gave up one run, earned, and struck out one.

Adairsville plays Tuesday when it visits Cartersville at 5:55 p.m.
