Rudy Winters scored 22 points and Excel came from one point down at halftime to claim a 57-49 victory over Holy Innocents on Saturday night.

Winters scored eight of his points in the final quarter with the game on the line, and he helped the Eagles, now 26-2, shake off a determined effort by the Golden Bears that would not shake apart until the game’s final three minutes.

The Golden Bears had clawed their way to within one point — 48-47 — when Winters drove the length of the court and pulled up about 10 feet short of the goal and rolled the ball off his fingertips and lightly over the outstretched arms of two opponents into the net to keep the scoreboard pressure on Holy Innocents at 50-47.

A possession later Excel’s Elijah Robinson dribbled the length of the court, too, but finished with a layout to stretch the Eagles’ lead to 52-47.

The Eagles frustrated the Golden Bears’ efforts the rest of the way with a 5-2 run.
