For 12 minutes the Bartow County versus Cartersville opening round game in the GRPA District 5 10-and-under girls tournament was a nip-and-tuck affair.

Each team had a lead and at halftime the score was knotted at 6-all.

Then Bartow exploded in the third quarter as Lauren McElhaney scored 6 of her game-high 7 points, Lollie Smith added 4 of her 5 and their team jumped out to a 16-8 lead.

Bartow was able to protect its lead in the fourth and earn a 20-10 victory and the right to play Whitfield County tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Houston Suggs Youth Facility.

Cartersville will play at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Houston Suggs Youth Facility against the winner of Marietta and Cobb County.

Others scoring for Bartow were Taryn Callahan, 3 points; Carli Clymer, 3; and Alexa Varner, 2.
