Everybody knew what was coming as the seconds ticked away in the closing minute of overtime.

Excel coach Jon-Michael Nickerson knew it, as did St. Pius X coach Aaron Parr.

It was high drama at its best as all eyes locked on to the Eagles’ best shooter going one-on-one against the Golden Lions’ best defender.

After nearly 36 minutes of intense, hard-fought, high school championship-caliber basketball played by two heavyweights, it all came down to Rudy Winters calmly hitting the game-winning shot as the buzzer sounded.

Winters’ buzzer-beating basket gave Excel a 64-62 overtime victory over St. Pius X.

“That No. 3 is a heckuva a shooter,” said Parr, who paid Winters the ultimate compliment given to a foe while Excel’s victory celebration continued. “He [Winters] made the shot against our best defender and under tremendous pressure.”

Cass 68, Ridgeland 49

The Cass Colonels made it two straight victories with their 68-49 victory over Ridgeland at home Saturday night.

The Colonels (7-15, 3-2) took command early by building a 16-7 first quarter lead and a 35-17 lead heading into the third quarter.

“You can see our correspondence growing with each game,” Cass coach Greg Scott said. “Tonight, we started out strong and never looked back.”

The Colonels’ second straight victory and seventh win overall on the season was fueled by Darius Thrower’s 19 points and Justin Reed’s 10 points.
