After playing three powerhouses in a row, Excel finally tipped off against a team closer to its talent level in girls high school basketball Tuesday night.

Though the Lady Eagles showed up more evenly on the scoreboard, they still came up short and fell 35-28 to the Trion Lady Bulldogs in their game played in Cartersville. The defeat did end a series of double-digit losses for Excel that ranged from 61-30 to 81-27.

Michael Roberson, Excel coach, said while the team stayed close, he felt it might have done even better and snatched a win on its home court.

“I felt the girls were not mentally ready to play tonight,” he said Tuesday night. “We had instances where I felt like they just thought they were already defeated even though they were still very much in the game.”

Indeed, Excel was very much in the game from start to finish.
