A once promising season all of a sudden hangs in the balance for the Cass Colonels.

After an impressive 4-1 start, the Colonels find themselves on the brink of suffering their third straight loss and failing to qualify for the Region 7-AAAA playoffs.

After losing back-to-back games to the Pickens Dragons and the Gilmer Bobcats, Cass is 4-3 overall; 0-2 in Region 7A-AAAA. A Colonels’ loss to the River Ridge Knights (2-4, 1-0) on Senior Night at Doug Cochran Stadium would be devastating. A Knights’ victory would leave them 2-0 in 7A-AAAA; Cass would fall to 0-3 in the same region and be eliminated mathematically from the playoffs.

Because of what is at stake, River Ridge coach Robert Braucht expects the Cass team which reeled off three straight wins to be the one that lines up on both sides of the ball tonight.

“Their {the Colonels} backs are against the wall,” Braucht said. “I expect them to come out swinging. It’s going to be a tough, hard-fought game from start to finish.”

It will be a game where Cass can ill afford to fall behind early, and a must-win game for both teams that could very well be determined by who wins the turnover battle.
