According to a BCSO press release, James had been in custody on separate charges before investigators were able to link her to the burglary. Sheriff Clark Millsap said more arrested are expected in the case.
Burglary suspect eludes Cartersville police
Cartersville police responded to an alarm at 1139 N. Tennessee St., Cartersville, early Thursday morning. The two responding officers went around the sides of the building to check behind it.
As one officer moved past a Dumpster, he heard a noise from behind two trailers near the building’s rear. He saw a white male wearing dark blue shorts, a white T-shirt, ball cap, black shoes, a pair of brown gloves and a red-and-white bandana covering half his face.
The suspect, later identified as Kelley Joe Rainey, was ordered to put his hands up and come out from behind the trailers. At the same time, the other officer arrived and told Rainey to come out.
Rainey did not listen to any commands and stayed behind the trailers, according to the report, for one to three minutes.
When Rainey did walk out from behind the trailers he was not wearing the gloves or bandana. The officers commanded Rainey to get on the ground. Instead, he started walking in a southeast direction while taking steps toward the second officer.
The second officer sprayed Rainey with pepper spray, but, according to the report, it had little or no effect.
After being sprayed, Rainey fled the scene, running toward a fence that separates the business from others on Slopes Drive. While the officers yelled for him to stop, Rainey did not respond.
Rainey hurdled over the fence and then got into a white Honda Accord and drove away. A third officer got behind the vehicle and tried to perform a traffic stop, but the officer lost sight of the vehicle.
While the third officer found the Honda a short time later, Rainey was not in it. Investigators collected the gloves and bandana and found a crow bar underneath one of the trailers.
Rainey was identified through his driver’s license and vehicle license plate. Warrants were obtained for the following charges: burglary, criminal trespass, three counts of obstruction, possession of tools for the commission of crime, prowling, reckless driving, fleeing and attempting to elude, disregard of traffic control device, two counts of failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to maintain lane.
