After year away from boys program, Howard back as Tigers coach

Make no mistake about it, Kent Howard always planned on being a head boys basketball coach. But when good friend and former Adairsville High School boys basketball coach Jacob Travis told him he was leaving for Model High School in Shannon, Travis’ alma mater, Howard found himself conflicted — especially after Adairsville Principal Bruce Mulkey suggested he consider taking the position.

Howard, a boys basketball coach for nearly a decade, helped the Lady Tigers basketball team improve by six wins last season, his first season as a girls coach. The decision to accept the opening in the boys basketball program — which he did following Travis’ departure in June — was bittersweet, he said.
