Cartersville schools set tuition rates

The Cartersville City Board of Education approved out-of-district student tuition fees for the 2012-2013 school year during its regular February meeting.

Current tuition-paying students will qualify for a tuition rate of $200 per family if the fee is paid by June 30. After the June deadline, the rate is $300 per student. The rate also is $300 per student for any new out-of-district student admitted to the system. Parents must sign a contract for each out-of-district student annually agreeing to the criteria for enrollment and continued enrollment as an out-of-district student. The criterion include the following: (1) consistent and punctual attendance with no excessive absenteeism, tardiness to school or checkouts during the school day; (2) satisfactory discipline record; (3) maintaining a "C" average or higher in each and all classes; (4) satisfactory academic performance on assessments, report cards, and/or other academic measurements; and (5) parent and student cooperation with school officials.

Additionally, the board placed on the table for public review changes in two policies regarding graduation requirements and promotion at grades nine to 12. These changes are the result of the change to the schedule at Cartersville High School from a four-by-four block format to a traditional seven-period day beginning the 2012-2013 school year.

Instead of 28 units of credit being required to graduate, the system will now require 24 units beginning in fall 2012. In the course of four years, high school students will take a total of 28 full-year units. The state minimum graduation requirement is 23 units.

The board also is proposing a different number of minimum units required for being classified a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior to 0-6, 7-10, 11-16, and 17 or more total units, respectively.

The board also is proposing changes in a policy regarding solicitations by students which will change the requirement for board approval for each school activity fund raiser to administrative approval and providing for summary reports to the board annually.

Previously the board has required their specific approval for each fund raiser. This change will give schools more flexibility for these activities throughout the year.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Cartersville School Board is scheduled for Monday, March 12, at 6 p.m. The board's work session will be held on Thursday, March 8, at 6 p.m.
