Mr. Richard Sammy Smith, age 65, of 3136 New Rosedale Road, Calhoun, passed away Sept. 3, 2011, at Emory Healthcare, Atlanta.

He was born in Adairsville, Oct. 26, 1945, son of the late Edward Bradley and Louise Sherffield Smith. Mr. Smith had attended Floyd Springs United Methodist Church, Armuchee, and retired from BellSouth after 38 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his family and tending to his farm, where he raised, among other animals, goats, sheep, turkey, emu, and spitting llama.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Nancy Lee Smith of Calhoun; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Sabrina Smith of Collierville, Tenn.; a grandson, Tucker Richard Smith; a sister, Linda Scott of Kennesaw; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Sharon Smith of Calhoun; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 3:30 p.m., at Floyd Springs United Methodist Church, Armuchee, with Rev. Lillian Hertel and Rev. Carl Alexander officiating. Interment will follow in Oothcalooga Baptist Church Cemetery, Adairsville. The body will lie in state at the church from 2:30 p.m. until the funeral hour. Jason Meek, Tommy Meek, Greg Scott, Wesley Scott, Russell Smith and Brad Scott will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Barton Funeral Home, Adairsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

R. Dudley Barton & Son Funeral Home, Adairsville, will be in charge of arrangements for Mr. Richard Sammy Smith.
