Woodland volleyball tops Cass; Lady Canes split

Just four days ahead of the Bartow County Championships at Adairsville, Woodland and Cass squared off against one another in a round of Region 7-AAAAA matches at Rome.

Woodland got the better of Cass in the two Bartow teams’ matchup, but each lost in straight sets to a second opponent.

Woodland defeated Cass 25-23 and 25-21. Woodland lost to Hiram, 25-14 and 25-16. Cass lost to Rome, 25-19 and 25-14.

Woodland will return to action Thursday against Rockmart and North Paulding at North Paulding. Cass next plays in the county championship tournament.

Lady Canes split

Cartersville defeated LaGrange in three sets in an Area 5-AAAA matchup Tuesday, but fell to the region’s No. 1 seed and host of the tri-match, Sandy Creek.

Against LaGrange, the Lady Canes cruised through the first set to win 25-13, then stumbled in a thrilling second set, losing 25-27. Cartersville would bounce back in a big way in the third set, taking down LaGrange by a score of 25-11.

Standout players for Cartersville in the match included: Lauren Wenzell with a kill, a block and five aces; Catie Heilman with 10 kills, one block, two digs and five aces; Grace Hunter with six kills, two blocks and two aces; Rebekah Stevens with six kills and six aces; Anna Mathis with eight digs; and Kameron Hendrix with 25 assists, three digs and three aces.

Against Sandy Creek, Cartersville lost in straight sets by a score of 25-17 in both. Heilman had six kills, five digs and an ace in the match; Stevens added three kills; Mathis had seven digs and 19 service receptions; and Hendrix had 10 assists and an ace.

Cartersville will return to nonregion action Thursday against Walker and Pope at Pope.
