Weather — both winter- and spring-related — has wreaked havoc on the start of baseball season in Bartow County.
For the first time, a local team finally got to play an official game Wednesday, thanks to LakePoint's turf surface. However, Woodland dropped the initial Bartow baseball game of 2020 to North Cobb by a 5-1 final score.
After the Wildcats (0-1) allowed a run in the top of the first inning, starting pitcher Peyton Posey reached base in the bottom half. J.T. Hampton came on as a courtesy runner, stole second base and later scored on an error to tie the game 1-1.
The Warriors (1-0) quickly regained the lead but couldn't put distance between themselves and the Wildcats until the top of the seventh, when North Cobb tacked on two runs for a 5-1 advantage.
Scotty Smith and Jakiyon Porter had one hit each for the Wildcats.
Woodland's game rescheduled game against St. Pius X, which had been moved to Thursday, seems unlikely to be played due to more anticipated rainfall. That would make Friday's home game against Sprayberry the next opportunity for Woodland to take the field.
