Mrs. Dorothy Coppedge Powell, age 98, of Cartersville, Georgia, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 19, 2019.
Dot was born on October 19, 1920, in Culloden, Georgia, to the late Mr. James and Clyde Griffith Coppedge.
She called Georgia home, mainly living in the Atlanta area for most of her life. She and her first husband, Mr. Fulton Holmes, raised two sons. She was a faith-filled member of College Park United Methodist Church and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. Dot worked at College Park City Hall for thirty years as the administrative assistant to the mayor, city council, and city manager. She was also active in many organizations and held offices with the College Park Women's Club and College Park Historical Society. When Dot retired, she remained just as active as she volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Young at Heart, participated in local AARP meetings, managed voting sites during many elections, and traveled to beautiful places like Alaska, Canada, Japan, and numerous European countries.
Dot is preceded in death by her parents, as well as her first husband, Mr. Fulton Holmes, and her sister, Ms. Jackie Brunson. She is also preceded in death by her second husband, Mr. Bill Powell, and her stepson, Mr. Ballard Powell.
She is survived by her two sons, Mr. Curt (Susan) Holmes of Cadiz, Kentucky, and Lance (Lou Anne) Holmes of Rydal Georgia. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Florence Colby (Mike) of Enumclaw, Washington. Additionally, she is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-grandchildren. Dot had a zest for life, a special light, warmth, love, and smile that all who knew and loved her will remember with each precious memory.
A Celebration of Life Service to honor and celebrate Dot will be conducted on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at one o'clock in the afternoon in the sanctuary of Sam Jones United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Lobello officiating. She will be laid to rest in Hillcrest Cemetery in Villa Rica, Georgia, following the service.
Her family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, July 5, 2019, from five o'clock in the afternoon until nine o'clock in the evening at Owen Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dot's memory to the Tranquility House Domestic Violence Center.
