Colonels fall short to Hornets on the road

The road to the playoffs for the Region 7-AAAAA Cass Colonels has been far from easy and far from kind. The Colonels entered Friday night’s contest against the Hiram Hornets on a five-game losing streak, with the last two being against the No. 1 Rome Wolves and No. 5 Carrollton Trojans.

Cass was hoping to pick up its first road win of the season, but the Hornets had other plans for them as they handed the Colonels a 34-21 loss.

Hiram was led by Marcuis Fulks with 165 yards, while quarterback Nathan Presnell completed 7-of-8 passes for 133 yards.

Despite the loss, Cass head Coach Bobby Hughes said his team executed well.

“That’s about as good as we’ve executed an offensive game plan in about five years,” he said. “They didn’t stop us one time. Every time we got stopped it was either a penalty or we had a bad snap in the shotgun.

“These kids executed on offense as good as we can expect them to do. We didn’t play very well defensively, and defense has carried us most of the year. They’re (defense) frustrated they didn’t play well. They’ll bounce back.”

Hiram (4-2, 3-1) posted three touchdowns in the first quarter. Presnell found Kyshu’n Battle for an 8-yard TD within the first three minutes of the game. The extra-point attempt was no good.

On the kickoff, Cass (1-6, 0-5) bobbled the ball and the Hornets recovered it in Colonels territory. After a couple of snaps, Fulks rushed in from 5 yards out putting the home team up 13-0.

Late in the quarter, Presnell connected with Battle again for a 14-yard TD.

Cass had a chance to score midway through the second quarter on first-and-goal, but a high snap would cost them 13 yards. The following play gained them only a yard and the field-goal attempt was no good.

Presnell was later picked off, which helped set up the Colonels' next drive for the end zone.

Afterwards, they were able to put together a series of plays to help lead quarterback Rett Moore in for a quick 2-yard touchdown. The extra point was successful.

With three quick snaps Hiram responded back when Presnell found Jermaine Banks for a 13-yard TD.

Hiram led at the break 27-7.

Cass came out after halftime with a spark of momentum and scored on its first possession with a 4-yard touchdown by Thomas Gilliam.

Both teams would score in the final period of the night. On second-and-3, Presnell handed the ball off to Fulks, who converted it into a 65-yard TD.

The Colonels' last TD came on a 9-yard run.

Cass was led by Moore with 102 yards. Malik Grimes finished with 46 yards.
