Bella Carnes had three hits, Brittney Cox and Skylar Chappell each drove in two and Sarah Baynard threw a three-hit complete game as Woodland beat Hiram 6-1 Tuesday in a crucial region matchup.
The win moves the Lady ’Cats one game ahead of county rival Cass in the race for the last Region 7-AAAAA playoff spot. Each team has three region games remaining.
After Baynard pitched a clean top of the first, Carnes singled with one out in the bottom of the frame.
Walks to Caroline Higdon and Jordan Duck loaded the bases, and a single by Cox scored two. Chappell followed right after with another RBI single to make the score 3-0 after one.
Baynard gave a run back in the top of the second but that would be all she allowed as she finished with just three hits surrendered, three walks and six strikeouts.
Cox restored Woodland’s three-run cushion in the third when she singled to lead off the inning, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Chappell’s groundout.
The last two runs for the Lady ’Cats came in the fourth, as Madgie Robinson scored on an error and Higdon drove in Carnes with a sacrifice fly.
Baynard set down Hiram in order in the fifth and sixth and worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh to pick up her seventh win of the season.
The Lady ’Cats will host Paulding County on Thursday at 5:55 p.m., looking to tighten their hold on that last playoff berth.
