Cartersville Comic Con 2018 set for Saturday

Posted

Back with a new name and location, Cartersville Comic Con 2018 will be presented Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Previously known as the Northwest Georgia Comic, Horror and Toy Expo and the Cartersville Comic, Horror and Toy Expo, this year's event will take place at the Clarence Brown Conference Center, 5450 State Route 20.

"We started holding this event three years ago in Cartersville,” said Dustin Ruff, Cartersville Comic Con's promoter, who co-owns Ruff Edges Comics along with Shane Hester. "We have had great attendance at the first two shows. Last year’s show was very crowded and the venue we were at just wasn’t large enough. We wanted something bigger and better so that our show can continue to grow, so we moved across town [from the Cartersville Civic Center] to the Clarence Brown Conference Center. With the larger venue, we were able to add several new activities, such as a gaming area and Q&A panels with our guests.

"My partner, Shane Hester, and I both grew up and have lived in the Cartersville area all our lives. We love the town and the people that live here. We wanted to bring something that we enjoy to Cartersville for like-minded people to enjoy without having to drive to Atlanta or farther. Our first event in Cartersville was received very well, and we were surprised at how many people turned out for it. The excitement in the community was overwhelming."

Serving as the event's vendor coordinator — along with her husband, Dutch — Melanie Cummings is looking forward to helping grow this event.

"We have almost 70 different artists, crafters and vendors from all over the Southeast," Cummings said. "It’s a family-friendly, fun fandom event. People will be selling everything from handmade art, crafts, decals, jewelry, vintage and modern comic books, vintage and modern toys, gaming products and supplies, cosplay items and much, much more. Plus there’s plenty of gaming tournaments as well.

"I would like everyone, including all of my vendors, to have a fun, enjoyable show and look forward to participating in … Cartersville Comic Con next year. … I have other shows where I have vendors from all over the world sign up and come back eagerly every single year," she said, referring to assisting similar-type events and conferences across the South. "I truly want that for Cartersville as well."

Entrance to the Cartersville Comic Con will be $10 per person and children younger than 12 will be admitted free of charge.

"My partner [and] I love to put on this convention for everyone to enjoy," Ruff said. "Our favorite memories of past shows has to be watching how excited all of the children are being able to see people dressed up as superheroes and being able to dress up themselves. We love to see everyone having fun and that’s what this is all about.

"We want everyone to have fun and enjoy the day doing something that they love. There is nothing in this world more gratifying than a stranger thanking you for doing something and saying how much fun their family had."
