The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office says several suspects remain at large following an early morning shooting at the Somerset Club Apartments off Highway 20.
In a press release, Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap stated that several 911 call came from the apartment complex at 91 Somerset Club Drive in Cartersville around 6:16 a.m. Residents reported shots being fired on the grounds, as well as a vehicle crashing into an exit gate.
When deputies arrived, one man — who has yet to be publicly identified — was found with a gunshot wound and “transported by emergency personnel to an area hospital for treatment.”
According to BCSO public information officer Sgt. Jonathan Rogers, “it does not look like he was at-risk for passing.”
As of noon Tuesday, helicopters continued to patrol the Somerset Club Apartments and its vicinities.
“We are still processing some evidence that we’ve recovered, and I think they’re done interviewing witnesses,” Rogers said. “We’re hoping that we might be able to narrow down who might be responsible.”
Continuing, he said investigators are on the lookout for two to three suspects.
“It looks like it was not a random act, the victim who was targeted, for whatever motive they come up with,” Rogers said. “The victim likely knew the offenders.”
Rogers said investigators have not determined if the suspects fled on foot or in a vehicle. However, he said the suspects are believed to be armed.
“We do have numerous witnesses come forward, so if we can put together a good description of a vehicle or a person, then we’re going to get that out there,” he said.
The suspects are likely to face several felony charges stemming from the incident.
“Of course, you’d have the aggravated assault for shooting someone with a firearm,” Rogers said. “I’d imagine there’s always numerous other offenses connected with these, such as battery … but at this point, I don’t know yet.”
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement were dispatched to guard nearby Cloverleaf Elementary School, which underwent a “code yellow” alert that morning,
More details on the incident and suspects will be released by the BCSO shortly. Those with information on the shooting are asked to call the BCSO tip line at (770) 387-5100.
