With the Cartersville softball team struggling so far this season, Colbi Ballard gave the Lady Canes a shot in the arm Saturday.
Ballard threw 14 innings against Troup County, giving up just two runs in back-to-back complete games as Cartersville swept a region doubleheader, 4-2 and 7-0.
The wins were crucial, as they moved 4-3 Cartersville above 4-4 Troup for fourth place and the last playoff spot in a competitive Region 5-AAAA.
Ballard gave up just nine hits in the two games. She also contributed on offense, with three hits in the first game.
Paris Poston also had three hits in that game, and Presley Edwards had the big hit with a two-run single in the top of the fifth to give Cartersville a 4-0 lead.
Troup scored one run in the bottom of both the fifth and sixth against Ballard, but she regrouped and threw a 1-2-3 seventh to end the game.
Ballard was dealing again in the second game, and the Lady Canes gave her some support with a balanced offensive attack.
Hope Short, Allie Jackson, Poston, Cio Seigler and Rylie Harris each had two hits.
Short and Harris scored twice, and Jackson and Ballard drove in two.
The wins moved Cartersville to 6-8 on the season. The Lady Canes will play next on Monday, when they make up a rainout with Cedartown.
