Track season has begun, but it’s still too cold for outdoor meets.
So Cartersville and Woodland runners went inside this weekend at the LakePoint Champions Center to compete in the Dunamis Super Meet.
The meet was open to professional, collegiate, high school and youth athletes, with the high schoolers competing against other athletes from various track clubs and elite high school programs, including IMG Academy.
It was the first “full-fledged indoor meet in the state in more than 20 years, since prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games,” according to a LakePoint press release.
Among the notable performers were members of the 2016 state champ and 2017 runner-up Woodland cross country team, as well as some strong performances from Cartersville sprinter Terry Berdin and pole vaulter Nick Bebko.
Woodland sophomore Carli Clymer placed the highest of any Bartow high school athlete in any event, finishing second in the mile with a time of 5:30. Freshman Baylee Evans was right behind her in fifth at 5:38. Cartersville’s Alex Machado placed 24th in the same event with a time of 6:26.
Clymer and Evans’ teammates also had a strong performance in the two-mile run. Tess Cochran placed seventh in the event with a time of 11:58, McKenna Trapheagen placed eighth in a time of 12:01, Lindsay Scifers placed 10th at 12:23 and Cartersville High’s Vanna Beach finished 13th at 14:03.
In the girls sprints, Demaya Bryan placed 83rd in her 200-meter dash prelim with a time of 29.21 seconds.
The only girls field competitor from Bartow was London Shaw, who competed in the shot put fresh off basketball season and threw 34 feet, 2.25 inches.
For the boys, recent Reinhardt signee Berdin was the only sprinter in action. He placed 16th in the 200 with a time of 22.96, and 34th in the 60 with a time of 7.31 seconds.
Bebko, competing in the pole vault, placed 15th with a height of just over 12 feet.
There were several more boys distance runners at LakePoint. In the two-mile run, Woodland’s Dylan Stermer placed 11th with a time of 10:53, Cartersville’s Parker Breedlove placed 12th in a time of 11:25 and Woodland’s Kobe Cochran placed 15th with a time of 11:52.
