Donna Welchel, who spearheaded efforts to form the league last year, said a recruiting campaign is under way for the sports activity and they are making plans for a 10-game spring softball season that starts in late March and concludes in mid-May.
“After a very successful fall season with five teams participating, we hope to have even more teams this spring,” she said.
Welchel has issued a 2013 Women’s Spring Slowpitch Softball League Information and Recruiting Plan to help interested players learn about and become part of the league.
She said because the Cartersville Recreation Department registers adult sports by team, the group is building teams from a list of individuals called free agents. New players at practices or games are asked to fill out questionnaires and indicate if they already have a team affiliation. Those not affiliated should circle “Free Agent” on the form.
Free agents will be included in the free agent draft on March 6 and become a part of a new team family.
“Our main goal is to build strong and competitive teams,” Welchel stated in the group’s recruiting plan. “Anyone wishing to change teams from last fall but [who has no] particular team in mind may also choose to be a free agent.”
Women must be 16 or older by Sept. 1, 2013, to play.
