Two people were killed Friday afternoon when a tractor-trailer sideswiped their 1998 Ford Expedition and caused it to strike a guardrail.

According to a Georgia State Patrol press release, Maria Tabuena, 29, of Calhoun, and Melina Trichell, 4, were killed in the accident.

According to the press release, the accident occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. The vehicle was traveling northbound in the right-hand lane near exit 293 when a tractor-trailer allegedly forced the SUV out of the lane when the tractor-trailer merged right from the center lane. The SUV then struck a guardrail and an overhead support pillar before catching fire.

The GSP and other law enforcement officers are on the lookout for the tractor-trailer’s driver. It was described as a long-nose, maroon and silver Peterbilt. The tractor and trailer were both “very dirty,” according to the press release, and the trailer is expected to have damage on its right side.

The GSP asks any witnesses or those with information to call the Cartersville station at 770-387-3701.
