Challenger Dennis Thayer defeated incumbent Kathy Foulk by seven votes to win the Euharlee mayoral race. Thayer polled 230 votes to Foulk’s 223, 50.77 percent to Foulk’s 49.23 percent.

“I’m very happy,” Thayer said. “I just hope everything stays the same. The vote won’t be certified until Friday.”

Thayer, a paramedic with the Cobb County Emergency Medical Services, said there is a lot of work to be done.

“We have to rebrand the city and clean up its image,” he said. “We can’t expect our citizens to keep their property up if we fail to take care of city property. People have an image of us as a sleepy little town and we must bring that image up to date. Our city is ranked 71st among Georgia cities with a population below 10,000. Why are we 71st? We need to bring our town up to date; we need sidewalks, better streets and cleaner signage.”

Thayer said he wants elected officials, city employees and Euharlee residents to work together to develop a road map for the city’s future.

“Although the LakePoint development is in Emerson, it is going to have a huge impact on Euharlee too,” he said. “We need a plan to manage that impact.”

Thayer said his first job will be to restore trust in the city government.

“We must either correct or get rid of conflicts of interest that exist in the current situation,” he said. “We must make sure that our employees are right for the job and are paid accordingly.

“I am looking forward to the challenge.”
