"I think it's just great [that we are re-opening]," said Jane Nations, manager of the Family Store. "Since we had to close down earlier, we have gotten numerous, numerous phone calls from the community wanting to know when we were going to open another store and where was it going to be. And it's just important for the community to know they can come into our store and buy quality clothing at an affordable price.
"It's [also] great for the people who are cleaning out their garages and their closets because they know they can bring it to us and the money that we raise here in our store stays in this community to help this community."
Proceeds from the Family Store will assist the nonprofit's services, such as its character building programs, disaster relief efforts and social services offering. In 2011, the Cartersville office provided social services -- food and financial assistance with utility bills, medications and rent -- to 3,055 individuals. Many of the residents seeking assistance had been impacted by the downturn in the economy, either by losing their jobs or having their hours of employment reduced.
"It's very exciting," said Salvation Army Lt. Michelle Wilson about the store's opening. "We have [had] a few people come by and [donate], which has been great, but obviously we need a lot more donations from the community. And I know the Dixie [Highway 90-Mile] Yard Sale is coming up this weekend, so that would be a great thing if people have things left over that they're looking to get rid of.
"After [that event] we'd love to take their donations on Monday -- anything that's left over from what they don't sell this weekend. ... We do have a need of volunteers as well. If people are interested in volunteering to help at the store, we'd love to hear from them too."
Starting Tuesday, the 9,800-square-foot facility will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The organization also will accept contributions of quality clothing, household items and furniture at the Family Store from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
